After a convincing campaing in yesterday's Group of Death, fnatic overcame Anexis in a tough quarter-final match with a 2-1 score.
Anexis, who are attending the tournament with a stand-in, the former mTw star Martin "trace" Heldt, found themselves in playoffs of a major tournament for the first time in the last few months, following several "almost there" campaigns.
The first map was de_train where the Danes secured a 10-5 lead as CTs at half time, despite allowing fnatic to come close at 7-5. In the second half, after an initial comeback by fnatic, Anexis went on to take a 14-9 lead. However, the Swedes were up to the task and they equalised the score at 14 rounds each. At that moment, Anexis' stand-in Martin "trace" Heldt won an unexcpected 1vs3 situation to give his team the map point, but fnatic retaliated and took the map into overtime.
As the extra rounds started, Anexis' in-game leader Danny "BERRY" Krüger was the next one to draw attention with individual heroics, as he won the first round by himself, taking out all five opponents. The Danes climbed to a 3-0 lead, which fnatic tried to come back from, but in the last round of the second half, another clutch moment decided the round, as Thomas "BEECK" Beeck brought Anexis the 19-17 map win by converting a 1vs2 situation to his team's favor.
The second map, de_inferno, wasn't as interesting as the previous one, as fnatic came storming out and winning the half 12-3, which they didn't have much trouble concluding later with a 16-8 score.
The last map was de_tuscan, on which fnatic defeated Moscow Five and Natus Vincere yesterday. The Swedes started as CTs and managed an average 9-6 lead, after which they won the pistol round, but then things got a bit complicated as Anexis took the second round and got themselves back in the match, with the score standing at 10-9. But that was all they could do, since fnatic proved to be a better team in the remaining rounds, taking the map 16-10 and thus the match with a 2-1 score.
